SYLLABUS FOR ARMY JUNIOR RESERVE OFFICERS’ TRAINING CORPS (JROTC) LET LEVELS 2-4

COURSE DESCRIPTION:  The JROTC curriculum consists of both mandatory and elective Program of Instruction (POI) topics according to the Leadership, Education &Training (LET) level.  Topics for LET Level-2 have been planned and approved by the US Army’s Cadet Command (USACC) at Ft. Knox, KY.  In addition to classroom instruction, students (“Cadets”) are expected to properly wear the Army JROTC uniform one day per week, and participate in drill and ceremony training as well as physical training events.  Uniforms are inspected when worn, and each inspection counts as a grade.  Co-curricular and competitive activities include Color Guard, Drill Team, Air-Rifle Team, Orienteering, RAIDER team competitions, Field Trip(s), an annual award ceremony, Service-Learning projects and an optional 5-day Summer Camp are also available for Cadet involvement.  In addition to an academic elective credit for the course, cadets also earn rank, Army JROTC awards for their achievements and leadership roles.  Certification of a cadet’s physical health is also a requirement to be enrolled in this class.  
CORE COURSE OBJECTIVE:  To teach high school students the value of citizenship, leadership, service to the community, personal responsibility, and a sense of accomplishment while instilling in them self-esteem, teamwork, and self-discipline.  Its focus is reflected in its mission statement “To motivate young people to be better citizens.” (This is the official JROTC mission statement.)

TEXT:   According to LET level, instruction from each of the following USACC text:
  • Leadership Education and Training (LET 3) The Supervising Cadet, U.S. Army Cadet Command, Fort Knox, Kentucky.
  • Leadership Education and Training (Unit 5) Electives – Continuing Education for Leaders, U.S. Army Cadet Command, Fort Knox, Kentucky.

COURSE REQUIREMENTS:  Cadets are expected to attend class, follow classroom procedures, participate in classroom learning activities, and complete all assignments.  In case of absence, it is the Cadet’s responsibility to make up assignments missed, according to a time-frame that is approved by the instructor.  A Cadet will typically be given 2 days to make up missed work for each day absent (not to exceed one week).  All cadets are expected to participate in classroom learning activities with a positive attitude so as to contribute to the overall learning environment.
 Cadets are required to wear the JROTC Army Uniform (provided at no cost to cadets/parents) at a minimum of one day a week (typically on Tuesday).  Uniforms will be issued beginning the Second or third week of school or as time permits.  
 Cadets are also required to wear a Physical Training (PT) Uniform to be worn on Friday’s during their JROTC Class.  The PT Uniform consists of a T-shirt and shorts provided at no cost to the LET 1 Cadets.  Should you lose your PT uniform, a replacement set must be purchased at a cost of $30.00.

** Marking period grades will be determined based on the following criteria: 
 
1. TESTS and QUIZZES                                                                                       (25%)
2. INDIVIDUAL PROJECTS AND OTHER ACADEMIC WORK                        (25%)      
3. UNIFORM INSPECTIONS                                                                              (30%)
    (Cadets who fail to wear the uniform will receive a zero on the inspection)        
4. PHYSICAL TRAINING                                                                                    (10%)
    (including effort and wear of the PT uniform)       
5. TEACHER ASSESSMENT/Drill Performance                                            (10%)
    (subjective assignment based upon cadet performance in classroom and drill.
 6.  Community Service is a requirement for the course.  It is expected that each Cadet will complete 20 hours of community service during the school year.  A minimum of 20 hours or 5 hours per grading period is required and goes in the grade book as a triple weighted test score.  The 20 hours can be completed early.
 7.  Most after school activities are voluntary in nature, however, there are 3 required events all Cadets are expected to attend and are graded events.  Those events include the Homecoming parade on a Friday night, military ball and the annual award ceremony generally the last week of April.  

 CLASSROOM PROCEDURES:  
  1. Instructor will greet cadets at the door.  Dress code compliance will be enforced.  
  1. Cadets are expected to enter quietly and be standing next to their assigned seat when the bell rings. Cadets are expected to arrive in class properly dressed for the day’s activities. Dress code compliance will be enforced.  Per military regulations, hair color can be one shade lighter or darker than the natural color. Unauthorized hair colors can include, but not limited to; blue, purple, green and pink for example.  Males are not allowed to have “Man Buns” or any hair pulled or tied back. Cadets will receive a grade of “0” for their uniform grade.  
  1. The door will be shut when the bell rings, and tardy cadets will be admitted after roll has been taken. Three or more tardies will result in after school detention.
  1. Cadets are expected to arrive in class properly dressed for the day’s activities.  
  1. Cadets will be quiet during all intercom announcements. 
  1. Cadets will not eat in the classroom (Water is permitted).  This includes no chewing gum or candy. 
  1. Cadets will help keep the classroom neat and tidy.  Cadets will not sit on the floor during class.  Desk are provided by the school for your comfort. 
  1. Phones are not authorized in the classroom and must be put away.  Use with permission is authorized. 
  1. Cadets are expected to arrive in class properly dressed for the day’s activities.   On days when the class is conducting Drill and Ceremony activities, proper shoes must be worn (no open toe shoes, flip-flops, hard/dark sole boots, etc.)
  
DESIGN OF A TYPICAL LESSON:
  1. Each student will be provided a handbook containing lessons and objectives. 
  1. The instructor will provide information for students through various techniques (i.e. lecture, small group exercises, self-paced instruction, video-based instructional media; student-led instruction; and student research projects). Instruction will be conducted inside or outside the classroom, as most appropriate (and as weather permits). 
  1. Closure…lesson content will be summarized and objectives reviewed. 
  1. Independent practice, study, and review will be conducted as appropriate.  
 
DISCIPLINE POLICY:   
  1.  The Western Brown High School Code of Discipline (as described in the WBHS Student Handbook) will be  discussed/clarified with the cadets on the first day of class and strictly enforced.  Cadet misbehavior that cannot be  corrected by in-class disciplinary measures will be referred to the administration.  
  1.  The Tardy Discipline Policy will be strictly enforced. 
      3.  Cadets needing to leave the JROTC classroom will be given a hall pass, and are expected to return in less than          
           minutes.  This will be permitted at the discretion of the instructor and must not become excessive.   
      4.  Cell phones, iPods, or unauthorized head-coverings will not be used in the classroom without permission of the        
           instructor (such items if brought to school will be stored in student’s assigned lockers or book bag).  If the instructor 
           has to confiscate the item, it will be returned to the student at the end of the class period, the school day or turned 
           over to the administration.     
 
HONOR CODE:  Cadets are expected to set the example in this area (see below, the “JROTC Cadet Creed”.)  Cheating will not be tolerated, and all cadets participating in such will receive a “0” grade on the assignment, and their parents will be notified.  
 ACCOMMODATIONS:  Any student needing physical accommodations will inform the instructor (with medical/parental documentation if appropriate), and arrangements will be made.

TECHNOLOGY EXPECTATION: (Also see classroom procedures).  Use of IPADS, laptops, chrome books, or like items of technology are authorized, however, no use of social media is permitted (Facebook, chat rooms, etc.).  If discovered on these sites during class time, loss of your privileges may result.
